Alpkit

Today I received my order from Alpkit - a fairly new web only ourdoor kit retailer. The service is excellent - I ordered late on Monday night, and my Good were sent Tuesday and received this morning. The website is very good bot in terms of design and content. Ordering was prett easy, but my credit card had a problem processing via the site. However, they rang me back and sorted it over the phone the next morning. I have not heard of this affecting anyone else, so I am assuming its just me.

The kit looks good so far - I got a Wee Airic (£15 light, short Therma Rest thingy), a £5 LED head torch and some pimp Alloy pegs. I intend to review the kit in due course, as soon as I get to test it.

Firefox 2 Beta 1 is out

From some early reports, beta 1 is pretty stable and well worth checking out. I will be testing this at home - and then possibly at work to check our sites are ok in it.

Grab it from the Firefox 2 download page.

Skype

Just started actually using skype - you can see my status in the side bar if thats your bag. I really need to buy a decent headset - so far I only have an old naff headset to use, but hey, it works!

I will post up a review when I get round to playing with Skype and servics like SkypeIn and SkypeOut.

Windows Tips

Lifehacker recently ran a competition for Windows tips, and some of them are pretty good.

Three-Key Shutdown: Hit the Windows key, the U key, then U once more to shut down your computer.

Execute full commands directly from the Run box with /k, like “cmd /k ipconfig”

And a couple more form me:

Lock Computer: Windows key and “L”

Run (combine with the command line tip above :-)) Windows Key and “R”

Anything that makes your life easier has got to be good!

Random Quotes

Some random quotes from 2 of my favourite authors:

“Always be wary of any helpful item that weighs less than its operating manual.”

“Gravity is a habit that is hard to shake off.”

“Sometimes glass glitters more than diamonds because it has more to prove.”

Terry Pratchett

“In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.”

“You live and learn. At any rate, you live.”

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.”

Douglas Adams

Oooh - a new header!

You may have noticed the new header graphic up there at the top. The phot in question features me, sat on the top of Helvellyn with striding edge appearing on the left hand side of the shot. The original photo was taken by Craig and is visible on Flickr here.

A good walk and a reasonable challenge - I could feel it in my legs for a few days after!

Hot Hot Hot

It’s 27.5 deg C in the office - (81F). I cant wait to get home and stand in the hall on the nice cool stone floor. Alas, I have a half hour drive home, and my air con doesnt work :-(.

Typing speed

I can type at 43 wpm (199 cpm) according to Joshua Rennert’s typing gadget.

Thats classic 2 finger looking at the keyboard typing - I like many people intend to learn to touch type and never do anything about it.

Now I need to find an open source (or simply free) typing tutor type program.

EDIT: I have decided to give stamina typing tutor a try - done the first 2 lessons and it seems to do the job.
