England Smoking Ban

The result is in, and we have a complete smoking ban in England in all enclosed public spaces from Summer 2007. Its a novelty to agree with the Goverment for once!

I personally support this fully - smoking is damaging the health of everybody in pubs, clubs and restaurants. Several times recently I have had to move around a pub die to someone smoking and removing my ability to breathe properly. When I worked in a bar the smoky atmosphere was one of the main reasons I left in the end.

It is a basic human right to do as you like with your body - but in this case, the actions of smokers are having a direct physical effect on those of us who manage to go through life without getting addicted to an expensive way to die earlier. If you want to kill yourself on the instalment plan do it out of my airspace. We have to share our pubs and restaurants, I cant see a plan to have smoking and non smoking places ever working. The final thing we now need to clear up is the clapping in irons of people who stand outside the front of the offices smoking around the doors and leaving fag ends everywhere.

The only problem I see is that I would rather see this put in practice tommorrow rather than next year.

I am currently studying business studies and am doing my dissertation on the Smoking ban. Is it possible to find out the actual date when the smoking ban will come in? has it been announced yet???

Robin,

Theres no info on dates as yet, beyond the estimate of Summer 2007. I assume there will be a lot of planning to do, and a public awareness campaign etc etc.

This is the worst law ever. I dont get it, cant people just live and let live. there are places where they smoke less, if you dont like smoke just go there, but this law is fascist and makes the country as boring as the US is nowadays, and people will stop travalling to england. To hell w/ this law

Robin - I am doing a Psychology dissertation on a similar topic - attitudes toward the ban. Do you wish to share ideas? Not sure if this is allowed on here - apologies if it’s not!

Annah,

Non smokers would like to live as you put it, so stop poisoning us!. There are very few places for non-smokers, as people like you turn up and smoke there anyway without any consideration for us. Consider the fact you are the smoking minority, not majority, so shouldn’t you go and find somewhere else not us!.

This law is democracy in it’s best form, choice of the people not the minority.

The Smoking Ban has now been on in Scotland for a few weeks. I am personally a smoker and I do not agree with it, I suppose it is ok when you are out having a meal, but it is really annoying if out on a night out and drinking. A lot of smokers say that they smoke less, but I personally spent most of my night outside like a dog having a fag and smoking a lot more, but drinking less. It hasn’t encouraged me to quit at all, pretty pointless as some of the non smokers go out with their smoking mates to keep them company.

I’ve just spent a week on holiday in Scotland. From the very first toilet break in Gretna the absence of smoking was an absolute joy. I never imagined it would be as fantastically refreshing as it was. Every pub, restaurant and building was a pleasure to be in. When I got back home and went into a pub the stink was immediately apparent and the place just seemed dirty with all the furniture, walls and celing encrusted with the slime.

Why, oh why does it take so long to introduce it to England.

Newspapers in Scotland also reported that the number of smokers who stopped going to pubs etc was far outweighed by new customers and their families benefitting from their new freedom to breathe!

PS, there is a non smoking pub in Harrogate and it is standing room onlky most of the time.

I cant wait intill the ban i spend most of the night out side the pub because i am asthmatic, so i cant enjoy my self as selfish smokers dont consider other people. therefore its not pointless its justice.

Why can’t people learn to tolerate other peoples life styles ?? The government promised a 50/50 ban in their manifest to accommadate all , smokers and none smokers alike. Experience in Ireland and Scotland shows that jobs and beer sales are at risk. If the 50/50 ban had been forthcoming all would have been satisfied. I say this, The government in their manifesto goit it right then they changed their minds and got it WRONG….

The first question has not been answered fully, when does the government consider summers begins.
Does the smoking ban start when british summer time begins at the end of March? or is it April.May, June, July?

I am a smoker, but am not proud of the fact. I try to be considerate and don’t smoke in pubs (except the evenings when the little ones aren’t there, and even then I feel a bit guilty).
I think the ban is a fantastic idea, it’s going to help me kick the habit, and hopefully many others too.

But to all those non-smokers who are being a little confrontational on the subject, please relax you are getting what you want.
To all the smokers who hate the ban, hey at least smoking is still legal.

@Harry I myself am asthmatic, but sounds like your condition is far worse than mine, maybe you should start supporting a ban on driving to reduce the number of people that suffer with the condition? Most drivers would never deem that reasonable despite the irrefutable evidence that car exhausts are doing vast amounts of harm to individuals and the environment. Motorists are being just as selfish if not more so, nobody’s perfect so let’s not pretend to be.

In answer to the original question - the ban starts on 1st July 2007

I think it is ridiculas that people do not have the right to smoke where they want. It is an infringment of our civil rights. How dare they condemn us and treat us like social lepers and misfits. If people dont like places that are smoke infested as they say “Then dont go in. Non smokers have a choice!!!!! Smokers have none now. We work hard pay our taxes and yet we are treated this way and yet the big wigs and decision makers and yes ” You know who you are !!! can sit in their work place and smoke. They make the rules and yet they do not stand by them good one. They seem to forget that the tax money they make from us “Smokers” pays towards the NHS etc etc. Men and women have fought and died for our country to give us the freedom of choice and yet we are having it taken from us. Its the elderly that I feel it for, they cant even enjoy a cigarette with their drink or have a smoke while playing bingo they have very little in their life and now they have been robbed of their enjoyment. What a sad sad world.

I agree…I think its totally ridiculous!! what happened to freedom of choice?! In these modern times everyone should have the right to choose what lifestyle they live..I worry what will be banned next!
Being a smoker myself i do not think that there has been much support or consideration offered to us. How are we supposed to cope with this sudden change of lifestyle? Ive smoked for over 20years and its going to mean a big change for me. I was having this converstaion with my brother-in-law last week. he feels the same and has been reccomeded by one of his friends to try nicofix. Im not sure how it works but apparently its a gel that you rub into your hands that takes away your cravings. He said it really works so i am going to try some for myself, atleast there might be something out the to help me get through the tough time ahead!

The smoking ban has reinforced what an intolerant, angry and anxiety-ridden society we have become.
Our nation used to pride itself on its tolerance of minorities and a fair democratic system.
Those who argue that it’s “democratic” for the majority to have their way at all times misunderstand the nature of a society at ease with itself - and indeed, forget that some 25% of adults smoke - probably slightly more than voted for the present government. What’s more there has never been shown to be a significant majority in favour of the total ban - so in broad terms twice as many people as voted for the present government are NOT in favour of the total ban !!! At least half the population - and a third of non-smokers - remain committed to tolerance and common sense !

We are all different and should surely be able accommodate and welcome the diversity that implies. Surely even we apparently wicked smelly inconsiderate smokers might be permitted to enjoy a smoke with our pint of beer in some degree of comfort and in the company of other like-minded and tolerant souls - rather than being banished to suffer the vagaries of the british weather. After all, no-one forces the squeekies to go to a pub - but being fair-minded, I would not wish to stop any landlord or restauranteur from deciding to have a no-smoking policy. That’s is REAL freedom - and the free market at work.
.
Having travelled widely, I have never found anything in the world to compare with the conviviality of a british pub. It’s a massive sadness to me that this wonderful part of our heritage will soon cease to exist as we are ever-more governed by the views of intolerant and self-righteous extremists who lobby fanatically to ensure that their own views prevail over those of the sadly silent majority

BAD LAW and a sad day - for England, its culture and our society.

Headline: College bans smoking outside

Shrewsbury College will outlaw smoking anywhere on its premises when the ban comes into force on July 1, it announced today. It means more than 10,000 students, staff and visitors will not be allowed to light up anywhere in the grounds, including on car parks and in parked cars.

Richard Banks, human and physical resources director at Shrewsbury College, said: “If inhaling someone else’s cigarette smoke is bad for you indoors, IT IS BAD FOR YOU OUTDOORS.

How does this work then?
Is this the most stupid thing you’ve heard?

Surely it’s my basic human right to be able to breath clean air??? Given that the majority of the country are non smokers then this right should extend to public places. We shouldn’t be pandering to the minority who want to spark up and pollute the clean air that the majority want to breath, this IS a democracy after all!

To all smokers that want to exercise their human right to smoke, just don’t go into pubs! (you all smell anyway)

wee had it first best thing to happen in scotland lol

why do all non smokers complain of smokers smoke, it saves you a fortune in fag money.

lets face facts AIR KILLS!
